Care Leavers

Caring for Forgotten Australians, Former Child Migrants and Stolen Generations Information Package

On 15 December 2016, the Australian Government formally launched the Caring for Forgotten Australians, Former Child Migrants and Stolen Generations, an information package for aged care services.

A Care Leaver is a person who was in institutional care or another form of out-of-home care, including foster care, as a child or youth during the 20th century. A Care Leaver is a term that includes Forgotten Australians, Former Child Migrants and the Stolen Generations.

The package was designed to give aged care providers an understanding of the unique experiences and needs of over 500,000 Care Leavers. It will help providers to offer inclusive services and care tailored to the sensitive circumstances of Care Leavers.

The package includes:

  • an information booklet
  • a video
  • a training facilitator guide
  • a PowerPoint presentation.

The package is available on the Department of Health’s website.
